Combo Wi-Fi/Cell Phone Debuts

NTT DoCoMo takes the wraps off the NEC N900iL combination Wi-Fi/cell phone, an industry first, according to industry analysts.

The handset, according to DoCoMo, is designed to support its Passage Duple system for dual-network operation as both a standard FOMA phone and a VoIP mobile phone over a corporate user's internal WLAN. The phone can operate in three different modes: cell phone only, Wi-Fi phone/PDA only or dual. The handset is designed to stay in dual mode whenever possible, with all calls delivered in the Wi-Fi mode, but the call will be switched to the FOMA network if a caller walks out of the building.
